About the Practitioner

Sue Scales, Licensed Massage Therapist, Reiki Master Teacher, Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Crystal Healer, Registered Yoga Teacher

2011 Graduate of Cortiva Institute - PA School of Muscle Therapy

Sue Scales, LMT, started Hands Down Massage & Bodywork in August 2011.  Her first office was in Downingtown, PA, and she is pleased to announce her relocation to Phoenix, AZ, in December 2017.  Massage is part of a comprehensive plan for health and wellness, and Sue sees her massage practice as a means to help individuals and her community to be well.

In January 2013, Sue completed a three-day continuing education course in cross-fiber friction.  Cross-fiber friction can help to reduce soft tissue adhesions, including scar tissue. It is also a helpful method for accessing deep tissue for massage.

In 2014, Sue completed a three-day course in Myofascial Release Massage for the upper body and also a course in deep tissue massage. Myofascial Release Massage is performed with little or no lotion and is effective at releasing soft tissue adhesions. Adhesions can result from injury; lack of hydration;  and underuse, overuse or misuse of muscles. Myofascial Release Massage allows the tissues to move more freely, resulting in increased range of motion. The technique can be somewhat painful when performed but often results in relief from pain afterward. Deep tissue massage is, of course, massage of deeper tissues than what you can feel just underneath the skin. Deep tissue work is not always necessary, but sometimes muscle tension can exist at several levels, and deeper massage might be recommended.

Sue is a Reiki Master Teacher and also a Karuna Reiki Master. Reiki is a Japanese relaxation technique which can also help to promote healing. It can be performed on a fully clothed person (unless Reiki is added to a traditional massage session), with hands lightly touching or hovering over the body. Reiki can also be sent from a distance. Clients have reported that Reiki helped them to relax, feel more focused, clarify their goals, and gain relief from headaches and other physical pains. Sue can give Reiki treatments, and she also teaches classes so that you can learn to do Reiki yourself.

In 2015, Sue earned her certification in crystal healing. Reiki can be enhanced by the placement of crystals on and/or around the body. During 2015 she also completed her certification as a personal trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

In 2017, Sue completed continuing education classes in oncology massage, treating the rotator cuff muscles, and helping to prevent running injuries. She is always striving to learn more and to increase her knowledge and skill set in ways that will help her clients.

In 2018, Sue completed the 200-hour yoga teacher training program at Yoga Pura in Phoenix, AZ. She also received training to teach Restorative Yoga.

In June 2019, Sue completed a course with Kinesiology Institute for Performance Specialists (KIPS) to be a Core Performance Specialist. She also received training to teach Yin Yoga.

In June and July 2019, Sue became certified as a Yoga Nidra facilitator. Yoga Nidra is an intentional relaxation technique that calms the nervous system and changes the brain to help people be happier and live better.

While Sue lived in Pennsylvania, she volunteered with Neighborhood Hospice to provide gentle massage and Reiki to hospice patients in Chester County. She also is available to provide chair massage at local events, businesses, and schools in metro Phoenix.

On Saturday mornings from 10:30am - noon, you can find Sue teaching Level 1-2 yoga at Yoga Pura on 7th Street in Phoenix.

On Monday nights from 7:30 - 8:45Pm, Sue teaches Yin yoga at Yoga Pura.
